Mechanical clutch is a form of clutch that uses hard rods to actuate a device rather than an electronically controlled method. Mechanical coupling can be into the method of a cable or hollow rod or a solid. Throttle clutch on a car happens to be characteristically mechanical, but a few vehicles happen to be equipped with a drive-by wire mechanism that works from a servo and electronic activator.

Most manual gear shifters use a mechanical clutch to change gears. The advantage of mechanical coupling over electronic or vacuum actuated coupling is the level of control that the operator feels when operating the device. The actual feeling of operating the throttle or shifting gears recreate the feeling of control in the hands of the driver. In many cases, the driver can control the vehicle much better when the sense of the vehicle’s response is put back in the driver’s hands.

By fine-tuning the clutch, the tuner can choose the response time of each machine by simply lengthening or shortening the clutch. Lengthening the clutch causes the machine to start a particular process faster, while shortening the clutch causes a slight delay in the activation of a particular process.
Technology continues to make advancements that take human input out of the equation. The mechanical action of the clutch keeps human input and control in the operating parameters of a particular machine.

Rigid, which are subdivided into: rigid with sleeves, rigid with plates, rigid with conical clamping and rigid with curved clamping.
Flexible, which are classified in turn into; Flexible rubber sleeves, flexible disk flexible, helical bellows flexible, rubber jaw flexible, Falk type directional flexible, chain flexible, mesh flexible and metal spring flexible.
Special or articulated; Side-shift crawler joint and universal joint, better known as a crosshead or gimbal.
Couplings are installed in two steps: First, each coupling half is installed on its shaft; second, once the machines are aligned, the two halves are bolted together directly or through a spacer.
